America Through the Looking Glass

2024

ISBN: 978-630-327-055-5

As made clear by the ten contributions that form an engaging and cohesive whole, the eighth American Studies volume authored by M.A. and Ph.D. students at the West University of Timișoara, under the coordination of the local team of specialists, proves the diversity and versatility of research topics that this generous study field affords and encourages. Far from proposing tedious or obsolete subjects of discussion, it illustrates the young researchers’ preoccupation with finding interpretive niches that might allow them to provide additional insight and innovative contributions to the already existing literature. As such, it is closely connected to relevant issues in the study of the United States and its evolution as a socio-cultural phenomenon across the ages. By descending from the ivory tower of the academia into the real-life agora of the community, today’s contributors support the view according to which research in the humanities is essential to providing the necessary critical tools and vocabulary for a deeper, more thorough, and more empathic understanding of past, present, and future realities.

The seventh American Studies volume in the West University of Timișoara’s series concludes yet another year of academic search and research on the part of the growing team of M.A. and Ph.D. students who have grown familiar with and fascinated by this generous field of study. For a multitude of evident reasons, Reading America in Europe 2022 has, indeed, been a matter of coping with complex circumstances. Therefore, the contributors’ individual and group musings, as varied as they might be, have brought to the surface the essential notions of crisis, challenge, and resilience, as underlying and uniting their constant research interests and, implicitly, the submitted articles. As Timișoara is preparing for its 2023 role as European Capital of Culture, the American Studies team remains more focused than ever on building inter- and trans-continental bridges, understanding cultural and civilizational issues via the generous lenses of critical thinking, and contributing its share of informed conversation to the dynamic life of the academic community.
